Trying to eat healthy? Here's my twist on one of my favorite warm and filling winter dishes. And, the hotter the better so pile on those jalapeƱos!

Ingredients

for meatballs:

  • 3 pounds ground turkey
  • 2 large Jalapeño peppers, finely chopped
  • ¾ cups red onion, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons Tabasco sauce
  • ½ cup Italian-style bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

for sauce:

  • 2 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced tomatoes
  • 1 jar (23.5 ounces) of your favorite tomato sauce
  • 1 cup red pepper, chopped
  • 1 cup portabello mushrooms, thinly chopped

Spicy Turkey Meatballs with Tomato Sauce

Directions for meatballs:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Combine all ingredients together well using your hands.
  • Form meat mixture into 2-inch balls and put onto a baking sheet sprayed with cooking oil.
  • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes total, turning after 10 minutes so each side browns evenly.

Directions for tomato sauce:

  • In a large pot, combine diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, red peppers and mushrooms.
  • Cook on low heat for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • When meatballs are done cooking, add them to the sauce and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Serve over pasta.

Makes approximately 35 meatballs
